Opening Night with Kaye Mahoney

4:00 PM, Saturday, July 3, the show is up and ready. There are a few new ways we've discovered to organize works on our hanging system as you can see from these few installation shots. I'm very happy with the show, it looked great. This was first time that we invited people to a show of abstract work and we were pleased with the large turnout.

The paintings covered a range of styles all of which touched on Kaye's continuing investigations of layered veils of transparent and semi-transparent color with a variety of application methods. I love the scale of these works as the having an emphasis on spaciousness and depth.

At 5 we unlocked the door. The chilled wine and the aged percorino and grapes are on the table. Here's Kaye as we opened.

We soon had a small group.

And then there was a larger group.

Some people, not only smokers, were outside in the street.

In this last shot, we gathered at the restaurant at Monte Oliveto.

Mille Miglia

A couple of weeks ago the road rally called 1000 Miglia came through our town. The 1000 Miglia happens every year and usually marks the true beginning of spring. Hundreds of antique cars, many I've never seen before come and drive around Italy, and I thought it might be interesting to show a few images of what this looks like from the perspective of our little art gallery. Two things not shown is the loud noise of very old powerful gas engines and the smell they produce as they idle at a stop waiting for the forward cars to make room.

March 13th, Opening Night

Opening night for the Lucy Clink exhibit was an unqualified success. So many things came together, great paintings, warm and dry weather and an expanded mailing list and journalist coverage brought out quite a crowd. Thank you to all who came. This was our third show and even though it was too early for the high season of the Provincia di Siena the enthusiastic response bodes well for the summer.

Here is Lucy. Notice that the picture is slightly blured. I did not want a posed photo, but Lucy was very engaged with the social aspects of the evening making a clear shot amongst all the people almost impossible.

Lucy lives in Rome and while a lot of her friends came to the show she was very open, engaged and made a lot of aquintances with the more local attendees. She was discussing this painting with Robert Etherington for quite a while.

Maddine and Joanne Morgante, who refused to pose normally, or maybe this is the new normal. I like the picture.

Lucy, as you can see by these few images, is a highly skilled and thoughtful artist. We felt very privileged to be able to display her works in our gallery. The paintings while depicting the Roman neighborhood in which she lives are about the art of painting as well as seeing. A close inspection of their surface reveals the layers in the work, the varied applications of paint, the decisions; the whole process is exhibited. That she does not disguise these facts, these changes, these means, enriches the experience of viewing and thus allows us to share in her creative act.

Angela Maria Russo Opening

The Marvel of Butterflies

December 19, 2009, opening day at La Porta Gallery.

I do not know how it happens, but when we have an opening anywhere near winter, we get snow. This time it came with the coldest temperature of the season and we got a number of calls from people not wanting to chance the drive into the valley due to ice on the roads. But the show must go on!

Stefano helping hang the show.

Above are samples of Angela's drawings and below are some of the watercolors.

As you can see Angela brought a nice range of work in style and concept, all with some relationship to the butterfly. Some of the works were quite unexpected with depictions of cocoons from various types of butterflies which made nice contrasts with the more traditional and colorful works which focused on coloration and patterns found within the wings.

Here is Angela standing next to one watercolor that focuses on part of a caterpillar.

We were prepared. Angela made the pastries which were delicious.

Ah, quite a few persons ventured out despite the weather and they were glad they did. Angela's work looked great and we thank her for sharing them with us.
